Running for Resilience

Ava Drake's 200-Mile Challenge to Empower Aquaculture and Communities in Tajikistan

When endurance runner Ava Drake set out to conquer an extraordinary 200 miles across the wild, mountainous heart of Tajikistan, it was always about more than the run. "Running for Resilience," Ava’s awe-inspiring feat—captured at Running for Resilience —is raising both awareness and funds for Aquaculture without Frontiers (AwF), a charity dedicated to harnessing sustainable aquaculture for social good. This epic journey not only highlights human determination but also shines a vital spotlight on aquaculture’s transformative power for food security and livelihoods in one of Central Asia’s most promising, yet underdeveloped, aquaculture nations: Tajikistan.

Tajikistan: Mountains, Water, and the Promise of Aquaculture

Tajikistan is most famous for its breathtaking Pamir and Fan mountain ranges and being one of the most water-abundant countries in Central Asia. Yet, it faces daunting challenges: over 90% of its food is imported, employment options in rural areas are limited, and communities remain vulnerable to climate and economic disruptions. Today, with the global focus on resilient food systems, aquaculture stands out as a beacon of opportunity for Tajikistan. Fish farming can offer nutritious, local protein, stimulate rural income, and build resilience against food insecurity—and it’s this vision that Ava’s run is helping make real.

While aquaculture in Tajikistan is not new, the sector is at a crossroads: since Soviet times, infrastructure has decayed, technical skills are lacking, and investment is sorely needed. Recent government strategies—including the "State Programme on livestock, poultry, fishery and bee keeping development for 2023–2027"—show national intent to expand fish production and modernize aquaculture. With more than 300 fish farms operating—mostly in Khatlon and Sughd regions, plus Vahdat district—there’s proven capacity and natural resource potential, but a clear need for know-how, technology, and scalable community models.

Aquaculture without Frontiers: Making Change Happen

Aquaculture without Frontiers (AwF) is a volunteer-driven charity using aquaculture as a platform for lasting change—championing training, improved practices, community education, and food system sustainability. Funds from Ava’s run, collected via Ava’s 200-Mile Run Across Tajikistan for AwF, will kickstart a new phase—supporting Tajikistan’s next generation of fish farmers and empowering women, smallholders, and youth.

With AwF’s guidance, local partners will identify communities in Khatlon, Sughd, and Vahdat—regions with the strongest fish farming tradition—to pilot best practices, hatchery upgrades, and demonstration projects. These initiatives will plug gaps in technical skills, promote sustainable feeds, and teach water and disease management—giving aspiring farmers the tools to lift families and villages out of poverty, while supplying healthy, local fish for all.

Why Ava Drake’s Race Matters ?

Ava’s 200-mile journey is more than a physical test; it’s a living metaphor for resilience, hope, and the power of community-led solutions. With every step, she underscores the challenges rural Tajik communities face and the promise that aquaculture holds—a promise of self-help, empowerment, and progress. As Ava traverses Tajikistan’s stunning landscape, her mission catalyzes global support for a country and a cause that often go unseen.

She’s running with—and for—resilience. And she invites the world to join her: by following her adventure on Running for Resilience and supporting her GoFundMe campaign, anyone can help send crucial resources and expertise to the heart of Central Asia.

The Ripple Effect: Creating Sustainable Futures

Funds raised will not only launch direct fish farming and training projects but also strengthen local networks—linking the Tajik Ministry of Agriculture, FAO, NGOs, education partners, and the broader AwF network. This collective impact approach is essential. With the right support, Tajikistan can leverage its water resources, harness the ingenuity of its people, and unlock aquaculture as a driver of community wellbeing and climate resilience.

As Tajikistan embarks on this new aquaculture journey, Ava’s run becomes a global call to action: to stand with the farms and families who will turn donation dollars into dinner on the table, and into hope for a new generation—across mountains and valleys. Through sport, solidarity, and the gift of a helping hand, "Running for Resilience" is set to transform not just miles run, but lives change.

Support resilience, support aquaculture, support hope—one mile, one fish, one community at a time.
